Music

Music

All pupils learn to play a musical instrument from Year 4. They can learn violin, flute, recorder, guitar, chimes, or the keyboard. Instruments are on loan from school and no charge is made. The school has its own orchestra. Children take Associated Board of the Royal School of Music medals.

Year 4 (All pupils)

Term 1 - Term 2

All pupils start to learn recorder at the start of the school term.
If pupils want to choose from guitar / flute / ukulele they must be able to:

  • Show musical interest and ability
  • Play and read at least 3 notes
  • Read and play simple rhythms

Other pupils will then rotate between chimes / glockenspiel / keyboard or continue with recorder and work towards a music medal.

Musical Instrument Support and Practise

  • Flute
  • Ukulele
  • Violin
  • Guitar

Practise at home is essential. These instruments need to be practised 4 or 5 times a week at home. Parents and children must be committed if children are to make progress and will be asked to sign to agree to this commitment. A flute costs £350 and will need great care with cleaning and storing.

We do not charge for lessons but ask for £25 towards the cost of annual servicing and a payment of £10 for a tutor book.

The difficult instruments are ideal if a child has the dedication and ability to want to take music further. (Please consult school for more information)
